Since 2008, the Department of Translation has started to recruit undergraduate students majoring in translation, with an enrollment of approximately 25 students every year. The courses for undergraduate students are translation dominated. At the same time, courses like Consecutive Interpreting, Computer-assisted Translation and Simultaneous Interpretation are also offered, aiming to improve students' interpreting and translation skills. The major of translation enjoys a good reputation, ranking among the top five in China over years. Every year, ,ore than half of graduates choose to study for master's degree at famous universities home and abroad. Graduates have found desirable jobs in various sectors and they are spoken highly of by employers y.
MTI center, which is affiliated to the Department of Translation and Interpreting,began to recruit candidates of Master of Translation since 2010. It added the program of Master of Interpreting in 2013. It’s one of a few universities in Shanghai with both interpreting and translationprograms on the master degree level. At present, the number of enrolled students majoring in translation stays at 40 to 50 every year, and the number of students majoring in interpreting is about 15.The students are very excellent, of whom over two-thirds are from 211 and 985 universities. They have won more than 30 national and provincial awards in various contests such as Han Suyin Translation Contest, Casio Translation Contest, English World Cup Translation Contest, East China Interpretation Contest, and the Cross-Strait Interpretation Contest. Most students haved passed the China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters Level Two organized by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security before graduation in both interpreting and translation. Some students are able to publish academic papers and translation works in professional translation journals during their studies. Students have also been actively engaged in interpreting and translation practice, and won praise from their internships organizations like Shanghai Disney. The employment ratio is high with good quality. Students found jobs mainly in Shanghai and in other parts of Yangtze River Delta and most of them worke enterprises and institutions, banks, Microsoft companies, Shanghai Disneyland, universities, large translation companies, and middle schools in Shanghai. The MTI program is among the best in the 2015 professional evaluation of the Ministry of Education.
The Department of Translation and Interpreting currently has 15 full-time teachers, including 3 professors (Ph. D. student advisors), 5 associate professors, and 7 lecturers. Among them , there are tenured professors of East China Normal University, Chinese and American Fulbright scholars, and “the most popular teacher”title winner s More than half of the teachers have doctoral degrees in translation studies. Interpreting teachers are active practicing interpreters in Shanghai, Guangzhou and the whole country. They include Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey graduates, doctor from City University of Hongkong, and EU Interpreting Certificate holder, possessing rich experience.
The Department of Translation and Interpreting is strong in both teaching and and academic research Teachers have published more than 100 books and translations over the years and so far have published nearly 200 papers, many in SSCI, A&HCI and CSSCI journals. They also edited and co-edited a dozen of textbooks and dictionaries and undertook more than ten teaching and research projects at the national, provincial, university and department levels. The“Chinese-English Translation”course of the translation department was awarded as the“Shanghai Excellent Course”and “National Excellent Course”, and the translation teaching team was awarded the“National Excellent Translation Teaching Team”.
