Established in 1980, the College English Teaching Department now has 68 teachers, including 2 professors, 14 associate professors and 52 lecturers, among whom there are onePhD supervisor in female literature research and 11 master supervisors in English teaching and translation studies. In the past two years, 10 people have been sponsored by the State Overseas Study Fund Committee and other projects to study abroad or teach at Confucius Institute.
The College English Teaching Department mainly undertakes English teaching jobs for non-English major undergraduates as well as postgraduate and doctoral students. It has teaching teams of postgraduate Englishcourses , an undergraduate academic English reading, academic English writing, academic English listening and speaking. It also also a teaching team of undertaking optional course, a college English teaching research center, an English competition center and an educational technology center.
In terms of undergraduate teaching, the College English Teaching Department took the lead in carrying out the reform of College English curriculum nationwide in 2012. Based on the situation of our university, it has formulated curriculum standards with our own characteristics, offered the main courses of academic English reading, academic English writing and academic English listening and speaking. The original foreign textbooks are used and the College English Proficiency Examination of East China Normal University is set. Besides, a variety of extracurricular activitiesconducted, including the English campus publication ECNU Circle, which was founded by students as the main body, the English program Voice of ECNU (VOE) of the school broadcasting station, as well as the reading workshop, writing workshop, teacher-student talk room, bilingual corner and competition center which are held all the year round. All kinds of competitions have effectively cooperated with college English classroom teaching and activated the English learning atmosphere in our school. In addition to introducing a series of academic English backbone courses for undergraduates, the College English Department also offers a large number of optional courses, such as English newspaper reading, English short story analysis and appreciation, prose reading, business English, situational communicative English, advanced audio-visual and oral English, translation and cultural comparison, English-Chinese comparison, Bible and English, American culture, general situation of the United States, entering Australia and so on.
English teaching team of graduate students began the reform of the English course for non-English major students at postgraduate level. There are Translation, Interpretation, Writing, Reading And Spoken English, Foreign Examinations, Spoken English of Foreign Teachers, Project-Based Learning, Business English and Travel English, International Legal Culture, Public Speech, Pronunciation and Reading, Appreciation of Master Pieces, Learning Based on Media Resources, Lexicology, Australian Studies and so on respectively for masters of Arts and doctor. In 2015, the reform of professional master's English teaching began. In the courses of Finance, Insurance, International Business, News and Communication, Applied Statistics, Tourism Management, Social Work, Law, Publishing and other professional master's English courses, the project-based learning mode was adopted to expose students to real English-speaking work situations. Through experience, research and teamwork, professional postgraduates can gain a lot about learning strategies, leadership and teamwork and their ability in analyzing, logical thinking, communication, planning and execution will be enhanced.
In the past three years, the College English Teaching Department has won many honors, such as Shanghai Key Courses, Shanghai Key Undergraduate Course Reform Project, Shanghai Excellent Courses, and “Shanghai Excellent College in Academic English . Teachers have successfully applied for about 20 teaching and research projects at and above the university level, with a total fund of more than 500,000 yuan, and published more than 20 CSSCI papers and nearly 20 publications. There have been more than 20 visits from peer colleges and universities both at home and abroad. Students have achieved excellent results in various competitions at the national and municipal levels, and they are also in the leading place in the national CET-4 and CET-6.
