As a former part of the European Language Department, the German Department was established in June 2006. There are 11 teachers in the German Department, including 1 professor, 2 associate professors, 4 teachers with doctoral degree and 4 lecturers (doctoral student). More than 600 undergraduates and a number of postgraduates have graduated from the German Department. The German Department has one undergraduate major with over 100 full-time undergraduates. It started to enroll postgraduates in 2008 and has 10 postgraduates now.
The courses for German undergraduates include Intensive Reading, Extensive Reading, German Listening and Speaking, Grammar, Conversation, Writing, German-Chinese Translation, Chinese-German Translation, News Listening, Foreign Newspaper Reading, Modern and Contemporary Literature Reading, German Literary History, German Overview, Business German, Cross-Cultural Interpretation between Chinese and Germany, Translation of Chinese Literary Masterpieces Reading and Literary Translation, Introduction to German Linguistics, German Poetry Appreciation, and Thesis Writing. Postgraduate courses include Contemporary German, Introduction to German Language and Literature, Stylistics, Advanced Interpretation, Analysis of Selected German Translation of Chinese Literature Masterpieces, Translation Theory and Practice, Thesis Writing and Innovation, Lexicology, Cross-cultural Communication and Comparison of Chinese and German Situation, German Literature History, German Literature Review and Analysis, German Teaching Method.
We have excellent teachers and outstanding students. Native German teachers teach regularly here. \.We have one doctoral specialist from the German Academic Exchange Center and one specialist employed by the university a. The students performed well in the National College German Test Band 4 and Band 8, and have achieved excellent results in various language and cultural competitions. Graduates mostly work in foreign-funded and joint ventures, educational institutions, foreign affair offices, financial institutions, cultural enterprises and other departments, and some pursue further study in famous Chinese and overseas universities
There are many academic exchanges and cooperation with foreign schools. Since 2002, the German Department has established long-term inter-university communication and cooperation with Bremen University of Science and Technology, Saar University and other universities in Germany. Every year, about 50% undergraduates have the chance to be selected to study abroad. In recent years, with the support of the International Exchange Office of ECNU, based on the cooperation and exchanges with foreign universities, the German Department has created new opportunities for undergraduates and postgraduates to study abroad at Humboldt University, Trier University, Hamburg University and Basel University in Switzerland,.
Under the arrangement of the office of teaching affairs, the German Department also provided courses of minor in German, with an annual enrollment of about 120 students. As a result, the German Departent has also help produce many graduates whose minor is German
