Recently, the Ministry of Education announced the results of the second batch of national first-class undergraduate courses, and 42 of them are offered by East China Normal University. Among them, “Introduction to Linguistics”, led by Prof. Yang Yanning, with Prof. Zhang Jisheng and Zhang Haomin on the team, was selected as a national first-class undergraduate offline course.
The Ministry of Education’s “Double Ten Thousand Plan” for first-class undergraduate courses aims to create a number of courses with breadth, depth, difficulty and challenge, to form a multi-type and diversified teaching content and curriculum system, and to achieve an overall improvement in course quality.
“Introduction to Linguistics” is a compulsory course for third-year undergraduate English majors. The course guides students to explore the nature of language, analyze its structure, interpret its functions, trace its evolution, and understand the key findings and cutting-edge developments in linguistic research. The course emphasizes cross-linguistic studies and the development of dual narrators between Chinese and foreign languages.
In 2020, the hybrid online and offline course “General Academic English Listening and Speaking (Advanced)”, led by SFL teacher Li Zheng, was named one of the first national first-class undergraduate courses. In the coming years, the College will continue to increase its support for course construction, and continue to focus on creating “golden courses” that are highly advanced, innovative and challenging, so as to improve the quality of education and talent training in the College with the improvement of course quality, and solidly promote the work of excellence in educating students.
