On October 8, 2022, the Department of Translation of SFL held an online academic lecture for the 71^st anniversary of ECNU. Jia Lanlan and Shuai Siyang, teachers of the Department of Translation, were invited to give presentations on “Intercultural Communication in Interpretation” and “When Missionaries Become Diplomatic Interpreters: Samuel Wells Williams’ Fear between Gospel and Politics”.

Ms. Jia Lanlan discussed the problems of interpretation in intercultural communication. Ms Jia gave a specific introduction to the translation of idiomatic allusions. She argued that there is no fixed formula for the use of interpreting methods and strategies, but that they need to be chosen according to different situations, such as the mode and occasion of interpretation, the intention of the communicator, and the language ability of the interpreter.

Through the case-analysis of the diplomatic and translation activities of the missionary translator Samuel Wells Williams, Mr. Shuai Siyang recreated the complicity and conflict between religious demands and national politics in early Sino-American diplomacy; at the same time, he also vividly presented the complex identity and position of the missionary translator in the unique historical environment of the time through the elaborate case study.

At this point, the academic presentation came to a successful conclusion.
