On October 28, the 30th anniversary of the founding of the School of Foreign Languages of East China Normal University was held. Alumni from all over the world returned with excitement and sought common development with the leaders of the School of Foreign Languages of nine sister universities. The event also involved representatives of the functional departments of the university, former SFL leaders, and representatives of teachers, retired teachers and students.
Since the establishment of the School of Foreign Languages in October 1993, cultivating multilingual and internationalized talents with a sense of nationalism and an international vision has always been the mission of the college. Three faculty members have been awarded the “Outstanding Contribution to Undergraduate Teaching Award”. In addition, eight faculty members have been awarded the Shanghai Yucai Award, more than ten faculty members the Baosteel Outstanding Teacher Award, and three faculty members the Outstanding Contribution to the Teaching of the Russian Language in China. A faculty member was awarded the Fok Yingtung Educational Foundation Educational Teaching Award.
After years of development, the discipline of foreign language at East China Normal University has gradually formed a pattern of discipline development with balanced development of secondary disciplines and distinctive research directions. The majors of English, French, Japanese, Russian and Translation have been selected as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, and the English teacher training program has passed the second-level certification of the national teacher training program. In the 2022 QS World University Rankings, ECNU’s English Language and Literature and Modern Linguistics majors are ranked 201-250 globally, and the Linguistics major is ranked 251-300 globally.
At the Dean’s Forum on “New Trends in Foreign Language Disciplines in the Next Decade”, experts in foreign language disciplines from nine universities discussed innovation and breakthroughs, positioning and development of foreign language disciplines.
