In response to the call of the state to grasp the “new infrastructure” of teaching and training high-quality foreign language talents, online seminars on phonics teaching in higher education were held in May. The seminars were co-organized by ECNU and the Phonics Teaching Research Committee of the Chinese Society for Comparative English and Chinese Studies, and assisted by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press. In total, more than 2300 guests and audiences participated in this series of seminars.
The theme of the first session was “Phonics Course Construction”. Professor Shi Baohui from SFL of Beijing Forestry University, Professor Liu Sen from SFL of East China Normal University and Associate Professor Liang Bo from SFL of Peking University made keynote speeches.
“Teaching practice of phonetics courses” was the theme of the second seminar. Prof. Bu Youhong from Shanghai Normal University, Prof. Cao Ruilan from Anhui University of Technology, Prof. Zhou Weiging from Yangzhou University, and Prof. Tian Chaoxia from Nanjing Normal University delivered keynote speeches.
The third workshop took “Phonics Teaching Testing and Evaluation” as the theme. Keynote speeches were delivered by Prof. Hua Chen from Nanjing University, Prof. Dunlai Lin from Beijing Normal University, Prof. Dongmei Ma from Nanjing University, and Dr. Hao Yuan Yue from Oxford University.
Based on their rich theories of phonetics and phonology, combined with diverse teaching, testing and evaluation methods, the speakers shared their cutting-edge research, which benefited the audience and received unanimous praise. In the Q&A and free speech sessions, the audience raised questions on practical teaching, phonological standardization, grading assessment, evaluation tools and other issues, and the experts’ responses to the related topics ignited a lively spark of thinking. The seminar on higher education phonetics teaching in ECNU came to a successful conclusion.
