On November 28, 2020, the 3rd China University Foreign Language Development Alliance “English Normal University Students Quality Show” kicked off. Held by School of Foreign Languages of East China Normal University,  this event is on a larger scale than before and attracts excellent students majoring in English from 15 normal universities in China. The fifteen universities are: Beijing Normal University, Northeast Normal University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Hangzhou Normal University, Henan Normal University, East China Normal University, South China Normal University, Central China Normal University, Nanjing Normal University, Qufu Normal University, Shandong Normal University, Shaanxi Normal University, Northwest Normal University, Southwest university and Zhejiang Normal University. The administrators, 30 contestants and instructors from 15 universities gathered and held a unique opening ceremony online.

At the beginning of the opening ceremony, Professor Yuan Xiaoyi, Dean of School of Foreign Languages of East China Normal University, made a speech to welcome the teachers and students who participated in the online quality show. Professor Chen Hong, head of English Department and Translation Department of School of Foreign Languages of ECNU, introduced ECNU's exploration in the field of teacher education since the university is one of the important bases of English teacher education research in China. 

QiuYunLong, Associate Dean of School of foreign languages of Northeast Normal University, said that the dual task of foreign language teaching and normal university students' cultivation proposed higher requirement for college English teachers' professional development. In addition to teaching, this event also consisted of students' talent show, enriching the practice of teaching and education. . 

Then Lv Linqiong, Associate Professor from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, took her experience in a micro-course contest as an example and shared with all teachers and students what she thought was the connotation of the new style of teachers in the new era.

Because of his own teaching and research background, Du Jian, president of Shanghai Primary and Secondary School Foreign Language Teaching Committee, called on normal universities to strengthen their relationship with primary and secondary school teachers through this event. He suggested that teachers should attach importance to classroom teaching and actively improve their own comprehensive qualities through the cooperation and sharing of resource platforms.

ECNU contestant Wu Wenyi and contestant Yan Zidan from Central China Normal University respectively talked about their new understanding of teaching and their new personal experience in teaching since the epidemic.

At the end of the opening ceremony, Associate Professor Quan Jianqiang, Party  Secretary of English Department and Translation Department of East China Normal University and Director of Foreign Language Teaching Research Center, introduced and explained the arrangement of the online event. During the two-week period, participants will prepare and record their classroom teaching according to the assigned reading materials, and present their talents in the form of video. The event will last until December 26, 2020. Contestants will submit teaching materials, teaching videos and talent show videos to the designated platform, which will be evaluated by the experts. After evaluation, the excellent works of the contestants will be published on the platform so that students can communicate with and learn from each other. 

The purpose of this contest is to explore the development of foreign language teaching and to show outstanding normal university students in a new way. May the 3rd China University Foreign Language Development Alliance “Normal University Students' Quality Show” a complete success!
